night time crying

Does anyone else's child do this? I have been reading some about 'night terrors' and it doesn't sound as extreme as this, but I do wonder why this happens? Sometimes between 9-11ish I will hear Zach cry out. Not really CRYing where he is awake and sitting up, but just cries out....I used to always go in, be panicked, etc but he was never even wake. That doesn't happen very often now but now its moved to the mornings. Every day around 4am he cries out. A few times, less than a few minutes worth. Same thing again around 5. Even though I am up at 5am, I don't like to wake him till at least 6am so he gets all the sleep he can. And every time, he goes back to sleep cause when I am in his room at 6am, he is fast asleep with his tush in the air! (which I think is one of the cutest things babies do!!). Anyway, just curious if other people's kiddos have these random outcries too? What kind of dreams or nightmares could little ones be having??

  1. I think they are just dreaming. My kids do it every once in a while. Just appreciate the fact that they are still asleep and obviously not in any sort of real distress. I love when they sleep with their tushies up in the air!

  2. Usually once a night, Bean will squawk or cry out. Not for long, just a few seconds. Enough to wake me up and put me on edge listening for more. :) Then he's quiet so I don't end up going in. Some of the kids at preschool have had night terrors, those are AWFUL and you would definitely know!

  3. Hey Lisa! I don't think I've left a comment to you before, but Peyton does this too so I thought I'd speak up.

I read a couple of books when my babies were small to help teach them to sleep through the night, fall asleep on their own, etc... Anyway, one of the books called these spells "phantom crying".

We all go through multiple sleep cycles during the night, and when we go from one cycle to the other we actually stir or wake up a little bit. Some people do this quietly and never realize it happens. Other people cry out, toss and turn, etc....More than likely, he's still asleep but he could be transitioning from one sleep cycle to the next.

Peyton does the exact same thing w/o fail about 45 minutes before she wakes up in the morning. It used to startle me, but now I either sleep through it or turn over in relief b/c I get almost an hour more to sleep. :)

  4. I concur with Trisha, that is exactly what both of my kids do. Sometimes Alex will even cry out a "mommy", but he is asleep, not really a bad dream, just a sleep cycle. It happens more if they are over tired.

  5. Drew does this all the time, at 11:30 like clockwork and then usually at least once more duing the night. It only lasts a few seconds and its actually worse if I go in b/c then it wakes him up. I finally just gave up and turned the monitor off. We are right across the hall from the nurssery so I can still hear him if I'm awake or if he gets really persistent but don't get woken up out of a sound sleep by it anymore. Good luck!

  6. Does anyone remember their baby doing it? Maggie has been doing this nightly for the past few nights. I go in and she is still asleep, but rolling around with her eyes closed. I can give her a pacificer, and she calms down. It is an hourly thing, and annoying.

  7. Lisa,
Zoe always does this. With her her it is always gas. I have often had to go between Gripe Water and other gas drops. Then I found the Gas-X. So now we give her Gas-X before bed and she will sleep through the night. If we run out of this I can be sure it is not going to be a good night so I know it is gas. She is such a gassy girl, always has been and I can't wait till her little body can really process things with out giving her pain, but that Gas-X works. Anyway that is just one thing amoung many things it could be. So just letting you know what it is on our end.

  8. Jayden does this periodically, too. He'll cry out "mama" sometimes too. Just transitioning sleep cycles I think. Also, you mentioned on fb that you think he might be getting teeth. That could be it...Jayden sleeps like crap when he's teething.

  9. Both of my kids cry out in the night & I think for them it is a sleep cycle change. Jackson also had night terrors after my surgery. At first they were scary but then kinda funny. One night I heard screaming so I rushed to his room & sat next to him on the bed - unconsolable. The all of a sudden he stopped screaming & looked up at me & said, "what are you doing, Mommy?" I kept all my sarcastic comments to myself, kissed him & tucked him in & went back to bed.
